The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the Rivers State local government election and its declared results, insisting that no legitimate election occurred.
The election, overseen by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), has sparked further tensions in the state. Despite resistance from allies of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, the polls proceeded on Saturday under the directive of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Following the election, RSIEC announced that the Action Peoples Party (APP) had won 22 of the 23 chairmanship positions contested on October 5.
However, the APC’s Publicity Secretary in Rivers State, Ikenga Chibike, voiced strong objections in an interview with Daily Post, stating that the Federal High Court’s ruling still stands, and dismissing the election as fraudulent and the results as fabricated.
Chibike explained that the APC chose to boycott the election to comply with the court’s ruling, which barred RSIEC, the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting the polls.
“As far as the APC in Rivers State is concerned, no election took place on Saturday. Any results being announced are nothing more than fabricated figures,” he stated.
He further emphasized that RSIEC failed to follow proper legal procedures for conducting a valid election, adding, “The court has already declared that any actions taken before now are null and void. We stand firmly by that judgment, which is why we chose not to participate.”
