Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has commended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for proceeding with the local government elections scheduled for today (Saturday).
Atiku stated that Fubara’s decision reflects the courage necessary to uphold the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy.
In a statement released late Friday, the former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urged the people of Rivers State to participate in the elections and make their voices heard at the polls.
“The local government elections taking place in Rivers State today serve as a symbol of hope and a chance to strengthen constitutional democracy at the grassroots level. These elections offer an opportunity to honor the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy, reinforcing the foundational principles of our republic.
“This election stands as a significant affirmation of constitutionalism and the rule of law, calling upon all true champions of democracy to support it. It is a reminder for everyone who believes in democracy to stand firm in defending the people’s right to choose their leaders freely and fairly.
“I commend Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his bold leadership in ensuring that local government elections are held in Rivers State. I encourage every resident to fulfill their civic duty peacefully and purposefully as they select their grassroots leaders,” Atiku stated.
He further emphasized, “I firmly believe that the democratic process is sacred, and through it, the people must be empowered to shape their future by choosing their leaders in every local community.”
