Horror as school building collapses, kills pupil, injures others in Delta

Ojiyovwin Salvation, a Primary 2 student of Eghereka Primary School in Ewu town, Delta State’s Ughelli South Local Government Area, has sadly died after the collapse of the school building he attends.

Salvation died tragically yesterday when a block of six classrooms collapsed, killing him and injuring three others.

Afripost.ng gathered from accounts that the old structure fell during heavy rainfall in the community.

The six-classroom block, which lacked a roof, was believed to be unoccupied just as timely actions helped to the rescue of the remaining students.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased student.

His Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, expressed his condolences in a statement, calling the tragedy “very unfortunate.”

“We have just received a report of an unfortunate incident. The Governor commiserates with the family of the deceased pupil, the management and staff of the school, as well as other pupils injured in the unfortunate incident,” he said.

Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude for the swift actions that resulted in the injured students’ prompt rescue, and stated that Dr. Lucky Avweromre, the chairman of the Local Government Council, had visited the site to offer the required assistance to the victims who were still alive after the building collapsed. Additionally, he paid a visit to the family of the student who had died.

He prayed that God Almighty would give the families, the school, and the community the strength to endure the irreversible loss and that God’s comforting presence would console them in these difficult times. He said that words could not entirely comfort the bereaved family over their terrible loss.
