Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara in the early hours of Friday rushed to the state’s Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to stop an alleged attempt by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force to take over the facility ahead of the local government elections.
Upon getting intelligence on the development, the governor stormed the office at about 1 am on Friday when the policemen were already gathered for the alleged operation.
A video clip revealed that the policemen attempted to scale the fence and strong room of the commission to allegedly cart away sensitive electoral materials meant for the conduct of Saturday’s local government election in the State.
Governor Fubara alongside his team, including government officials, federal and state lawmakers, top political stakeholders, and other leaders stormed the facility.
The Chief of Staff, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and State and National Assembly members, along side other stakeholders, are currently manning the RSIEC office to prevent further police invasion.
