A 42-year-old man, Oluwatosin Ojo, on Thursday, appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court charged with breaking into two shops and stealing N815,450 worth of foodstuffs and provisions
The defendant, who resides at No. 111 Moferere St., Ado-Ekiti, is standing trial on a two-count charge of shop breaking and stealing.
The police prosecutor, Insp Olasunkanmi Bamikole, told the court that the defendant and his accomplice, now at large, committed the offences on June 28 at about 1:35 a.m., at Moferere Area in Ado-Ekiti.
Bamikole said that the defendant and his accomplice allegedly broke into the shop of Oluwatosin Adaramola and stole foodstuffs valued at N761, 550.
Bamikole said that the defendant and his accomplice also broke into a provision shop in the same vicinity belonging to one Omolara Seun and stole provisions valued at N53,900.
The offences, the prosecutor said, contravened Sections 324 and 390 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State 2021.
He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Counsel to the defendant, Mr Olawumi Olowolafe, urged the court to grant his client bail with a promise that he would not abscond.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Saka Afunso, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
He adjourned the case until Aug. 1 for hearing.
