Asaba traditional ruler, Edozien is dead

The Asagba of Asaba, Delta State, Obi Joseph Edozien, is dead.

The monarch, aged 99 passed away on Wednesday.

The news of Edozien’s demise was announced on Thursday with residents of the state capital describing his death as a great loss to the kingdom.

A palace source, who is one of the monarch’s top aides, confirmed his death to newsmen.

The source familiar with the workings of the palace, however, said there would be no public statement on the development until after seven days.

Recall that on January 9, 2024, 1000 trees were planted in his honour as part of the activities lined up for the celebration of Asagba’s 100 birthday anniversary.

“It is true that the Asagba is no more. But we respect our tradition so much. Our tradition forbids the official announcement of the monarch’s death before seven days,” the source said.

The news of the Asaba’s demise is coming hours after reports of the death of a former federal lawmaker from the state, Dr Cairo Ojougboh, on Wednesday.

The politician, who was a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, was said to have passed away while watching the AFCON semi-final match between Nigeria and South Africa.

A source close to the politician said, “Cairo Ojougboh, a medical doctor died during the Nigeria vs South Africa match.

“The incident happened when the penalty was awarded against Nigeria. Dr Ojougboh was said to have shouted and slumped due to a massive heart attack when SA scored.”
