Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, have expressed their readiness to comply with the strike action initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC.
The OAU ASUU Chairman, Prof Anthony Odiwe disclosed this to journalists on Tuesday.
Odiwe stated that the Union had ordered all its members to withdraw their services with effect from midnight of Tuesday, November 14.
According to him, this action is in compliance with the national directive.
He said, “I have already sent messages and directives to our members. We will comply. I’m getting ready to come to school, we need to drop a letter to the Vice-Chancellor to inform him officially.”
Recall that NLC had declared a total nationwide strike starting Tuesday, November 14, 2023, to protest the assault on its President, Joe Ajaero by the police in Owerri, Imo State, early in the month.
Also, the strike was directed to press home the demand of the labour unions for the redeployment of the Imo State Commissioner of Police.
The police had denied arresting Ajaero, insisting that he was taken into protective custody to prevent a mob attack.
