Over three hundred persons that were affected by the 2023 flood disaster in Abakaliki Local government Area of Ebonyi State has received relief materials from the federal government through National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The Executive Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Hon. Stephen Ebere Nwogba commended the federal government through the NEMA for providing the relief materials that worths millions of naira to the victims.
Nwogba while interacting with Afripost Reporter in his office at the Local Government Council Headquarters at Nkaliki, said the federal government’s intervention in assisting the state and local government is part of their contributions and efforts in reducing the burden of the affected farmers in the 2022 flood.
In his remarks, the Chairman thanked the state government through the honourable Commissioner for Human Capital Development, Hon. Mrs. Ann Aligwe whose office was used by the federal government to reach the intended beneficiaries, while admonishing the victims to maintain decorum in their quest for more supports.
He also observed that human activities such as erection of structures and dumping of refuse along waterways are also one of the causes of flood disaster mostly in the urban areas. He called on those living in such areas to desist from all forms of environmental degradation which is capable of causing flooding in the society.
Aligwe, while flagging off the distribution of the relief materials for the flood and other forms of natural disasters, encouraged those affected by any of the disasters to remain calm and be supportive to the present administration, adding that the state government would soon distribute the palliatives that are meant to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal.
NEMA representatives, Mr. Kadir Olarewaju in his speech noted that the federal government released the items in response to the complaints on the economic hardship facing the people who were affected by the flood disaster and encouraged the beneficiaries to ensure that those Items are properly used.
He added that state government in line with the federal government would not relent in responding to the people especially at this hard time.
On her parts, the Vice Chairman, Mrs.Vivian Iyele, speaking on behalf of others appreciated NEMA officials both federal and the state government for coming to their assistance especially at this critical period of subsidy removal effects.
