Israel has bombarded the Gaza Strip from an air raid after Hamas announced the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against it. Israel called its operation “Iron Sword.”
The group said it has fired thousands of rockets into Israel. Several persons were said to have been killed while others were injured.
According to Israeli media, 200 people have been wounded in the ongoing Hamas attack. This was backed by details from various hospitals.
At least two dozen are seriously or critically wounded, a report by the Times of Israel said.
The report added that at least six people have been confirmed killed.
The head of a regional council for Israeli border areas northeast of the Gaza Strip has been killed in a firefight, according to the council.
“The president of the regional council, Ofir Liebstein, was killed during an exchange of fire with terrorists,” the Shaar Negev regional council said in a statement.
The Israeli military is fighting Hamas fighters in seven locations in southern Israel near the fence with the Gaza Strip, according to the Times of Israel.
The gun battles are taking place in and around the towns of Kfar Aza, Sderot, Sufa, Nahal Oz, Magen, Be’eri, and the Re’im military base, it reported.
A statement by Benjamin Natanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, said Israel is at war and not just an operation. He vowed to dislodge Hamas and his supporters, saying they will soon see what they have never seen before.
The Gaze Stripe has always been a disputed region between Israel and Palestine.
