The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) strongly condemns the recent acts of violence and destruction perpetrated by individuals suspected to be soldiers in Umualumaku Umueze, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area, Imo State.
The group is deeply saddened and outraged by the wanton destruction of property, including shops, drinking joints, and other businesses, in the Oriendu community. This reprisal attack, which followed the tragic killing of security personnel, is not only unjust but also a flagrant violation of the rules of engagement for soldiers involved in internal security operations.
HURIWA therefore demands that those responsible for these acts of violence be identified, apprehended, and brought to justice without delay. No one should be above the law, and those who engage in criminal activities must face the consequences of their actions.
We appreciate the Nigerian Army’s denial of involvement in these destructive actions, and we urge all relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into these incidents to ascertain the true perpetrators. The safety and well-being of innocent civilians must be paramount in all security operations.
We stand in solidarity with the residents of Umualumaku Umueze and all affected individuals. We call upon the government, law enforcement agencies, and the military to ensure the safety and security of the people in the affected area and to take swift action to restore normalcy and protect the rights and property of law-abiding citizens.
The civil rights group extends our heartfelt condolences to the families of the security personnel who lost their lives in the initial incident, and we share in the grief of all those affected by these unfortunate events.
We also appreciate the commitment of the acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, in pursuing inter-agency collaboration to uncover those responsible for the recent killings of security operatives in Imo State. We urge all citizens with information related to these incidents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in their investigation efforts.
The group reiterates our call for justice, accountability, and the restoration of peace in Umualumaku Umueze and its surrounding areas. We believe that a united and determined effort can bring about the resolution of this unfortunate situation and prevent further acts of violence in our community.
