Rema, Selena Gomez win 2023 MTV Video Music Award

Nigerian afrobeat singer Rema and Selena Gomez have won the 2023 MTV Video Music Award.

The duo were honoured with some shiny hardware at the VMAs for their work on “Calm Down,” taking home the award for Best Afrobeats.

“This means so much seeing Afrobeats grow this big,” Rema said while accepting the trophy. It was a high honour in a competitive category, and both Rema and Selena expressed great thanks to everyone who helped make it happen.

The song surpassed a billion streams on Spotify over the weekend.

Rema’s collaborative hit song with Selena Gomez was adjudged the first-ever winner of the newly created “Best Afrobeats Song” category over his compatriots Wizkid’s “2 Sugar”, Burna Boy’s “It’s Plenty”, Fireboy and Asake’s “Bandana”, Davido’s “Unavailable”, Ayra Starr’s “Rush”, and Cameroonian singer, Libianca’s “People.”
