A colleague and schoolmate of a doctor killed in an elevator crash in Lagos hospital, Vwaere Daiso, has raised so many questions regarding the state of the General Hospital, Odan in Lagos Island, alleging that the deceased doctor couldn’t have died if everything was in place.
The Doctor, Joy Aifuobhokhan who appeared on Arise Tv morning show on Tuesday monitored by videonaija described the situation at the hospital as highly frustrating and similar to hell.
According to the doctor who said she finished from the same university as the deceased Daiso, the issue with the elevator started as far back as 2019.
She said that despite the several complaints and letters sent to the authority to look into the faulty elevator, nothing tangible was done.
According to doctor Joy, it got to a point that they had to devise a means of fetching water from the ground floor to the last floor just to have water to bath after work.
“Some of us were made to spend at least N2000 for just a bucket of water to taken up to our room because sometimes you are fatigued.”
She said when the elevator was fixed after several years of complaint, there were still issues with it.
Consequently, letters were submitted to the authorities on the need to fix the elevator as it was stopping intermittently halfway.
According to her, ” Most of the time, there is no water and no light. After each call, doctors return to carry buckets of water to their rooms amid darkness.”
Dr Joy lamented that Dr Daiso would have been saved if necessary actions were taken when she was still trapped in the elevator, accusing the Chief medical director and the facility managers of failing to be proactive.
She said when the installer of the elevators were brought in, they were unable to factor what to do to rescue the deceased. She blamed inexperience on the part of the elevator installers for their action.
She also lamented that that the machine used to check Daiso’s vitals never worked until she gave up, alleging that none of those machine works even with other patients. She lamented deficit medical equipment in Lagos hospitals.
She called for proper investigation of everyone linked to the elevator crash, including the CMD and the facility manager, waring that any disciplinary measures to be taken must not be shrouded in secrecy.
