RMAFC denies reports of 114% salary increment for political, public office holders

The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has swiftly refuted recent media reports, that it has granted approval for a staggering 114% salary increment for political office-holders, judicial officials, and public servants.

The controversy surrounding the alleged salary increment originated from Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, a Federal Commissioner in the Commission, who made the statement during her representation of RMAFC Chairman, Mohammad Shehu, at a report presentation in Birnin Kebbi. Tanko-Ayuba purportedly claimed that the reviewed remuneration packages would be implemented starting from January 1, 2023. However, the Commission’s spokesperson firmly denied these assertions.

Christian Nwachukwu categorically stated that neither Chairman Shehu nor himself had made any statements confirming the salary increment. Expressing his uncertainty about the source of the story, he emphasized that the approval process was still ongoing. Nwachukwu stressed that until the President gives his assent and it becomes a law, the increment cannot be considered effective. The matter would require a bill to be sent to the National Assembly, completed through the legislative process, and finally reach the President’s table for his approval.

When asked about the accuracy of the circulating reports, Nwachukwu suggested interpreting the situation based on one’s understanding to avoid misquoting him. Regarding the progress of the bill in the National Assembly, he simply mentioned that “everything is under the process,” implying that the necessary steps are being taken.

This clarification from the RMAFC serves to debunk the widespread belief in the salary increment. As the Commission asserts, no official approval has been granted, and the process is still far from completion. It is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and rely on accurate information to avoid the dissemination of false news.
