FG, Enugu Govt collaborate to boost Akanu Ibiam international airport

The Federal government and the Enugu State government have joined forces to enhance the Akanu Ibiam International Airport by completing and operationalizing its international wing. Additionally, they plan to construct a cargo terminal to strengthen the state’s economy, promote tourism, and support the nation’s overall growth.

During a tour of the ongoing international terminal building and the proposed site for the cargo terminal, Mr. Kabir Yusuf Mohammed, the Managing Director and CEO of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and Dr. Peter Mbah, the Governor of Enugu State, expressed their commitment to this collaboration. They acknowledged the importance of timely action and partnership in realizing these ambitious projects.

Mr. Mohammed commended Governor Mbah’s dedication and urgency in bringing the international terminal and cargo terminal to fruition. He emphasized the significance of exploring the right formula to make the international terminal operational, assuring that it will be put to use in the shortest possible time. Recognizing Enugu as a hub for trading activities, especially in the South-Eastern region, Mr. Mohammed emphasized that a cargo terminal would significantly contribute to the economic growth of the South-East Zone and the nation as a whole.

Governor Mbah stressed the critical role of the cargo terminal in Enugu’s pursuit of a $30 billion economy. As the state transitions from agriculture to agro-allied industrialization, the terminal is essential for facilitating exports. By partnering with FAAN, the state aims to complete and operationalize the cargo terminal, enabling efficient export activities. The Governor also highlighted the importance of the international wing for tourism development and attracting millions of visitors to Enugu annually.

Addressing the challenge of funding, Governor Mbah expressed confidence in finding viable financing models for the projects. Considering their revenue-yielding potential, he believes that a financing solution can be identified to realize the projects promptly. Both FAAN and the state government are committed to exploring various funding options.

Furthermore, discussions between the state government and FAAN encompassed establishing a strategic framework with defined timelines for the completion of the projects. The Governor emphasized that actions would go beyond mere words, ensuring that the projects progress as planned.
