Gani Adams urges Tinubu to revamp 1999 constitution for Nigeria’s fulfillment

Must read

In a significant call to action, Gani Adams, the Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to undertake a comprehensive overhaul of the 1999 constitution. Adams believes that by embracing a regional system of government, Nigeria can truly achieve its dreams and witness accelerated development.

Speaking at the 30th commemoration anniversary of June 12, 1993, in Lagos, Adams emphasized that the 1979 and 1999 constitutions were forced upon Nigerians by the military, serving as tools to preserve their atrocities. He firmly believes that the country must return to regionalism, enabling federating states to develop at their own pace and realize their full potential.

Adams expressed, “The constitutions have always remained the bane of Nigeria. That is why we are where we are at the moment. Unless we embrace regionalism and let the federating units develop at their own pace, Nigeria may find it very difficult to realize its lofty dreams. With a new administration in power, there is a dire need for President Bola Tinubu to introduce a policy direction that prioritizes the well-being of the people.”

He further highlighted that while challenges have threatened the foundation of democracy in the country, a strategic and thoughtful approach can lead to significant improvements. Adams firmly believes that relying on the current 1999 constitution impedes progress and hinders the country’s potential.

During the event, Dr. Oseni Taiwo Afisi, a professor of Philosophy and Director of Special Interventions from the Lagos State University (LASU), delivered a lecture on “June 12 election: Identity Politics and the National Question.” He shed light on the pivotal role played by socio-cultural groups and individuals in advancing democracy.

Gani Adams’s passionate plea to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to revamp the 1999 constitution highlights the pressing need for a regional system of government. By doing so, Nigeria can break free from the constraints imposed by past constitutions and pave the way for accelerated development and the realization of its lofty dreams.
