President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians over the removal of fuel subsidy, saying he feels their pain, but subsidy had to be removed in order to save the country.
Tinubu stated this during his nationwide address in celebration of Democracy Day.
June 12 is set aside in remembrance of the annulled election of Moshood Abiola by the then military junta of president Ibrahim Babangida.
But Tinubu speaking on the removal of fuel subsidy acknowledged that the decision could plunder the masses of Nigerians into hardship, but appealed that the aim was to save the country from going under.
He said:
“I admit, the decision will impose extra burden on the masses of our people. I feel your pain. This is one decision we must bear to see our country from going under and take our resources away from the strangle hold of a few of the unpatriotic elements.
“I ask you my compatriot to sacrifice a little more for the survival of our country. For your trust and belief in us, I assure you that your sacrifice shall not be in vein. The government I lead will pay you through massive investment in transportation, infrastructure, education, regular power supply, healthcare and other public utilities that will improve the quality of lives.”
