In a surprising turn of events, the Department of State Services (DSS) has officially denied the news reports suggesting the arrest of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele. Following his suspension from office, speculations arose that Emefiele was taken into custody by the DSS. However, DSS spokesperson, Dr. Peter Afunanya, clarified that Emefiele is not currently in their custody, shedding light on the situation.
Addressing the media, Dr. Afunanya emphasized that the reports of Emefiele’s arrest were unfounded. Prior to this clarification, inquiries made by the media to the DSS regarding Emefiele’s status had received a response indicating that confirmations could not be made at that time due to overwhelming inquiries.
While the suspension of Emefiele was announced by President Bola Tinubu, the DSS had previously accused him of involvement in terrorism financing. The agency claimed to have uncovered evidence suggesting Emefiele’s association with a known terror financier, but the identity was not disclosed. The DSS expressed the need for Emefiele to answer for these allegations of terrorism financing and other economic crimes that pose a threat to national security.
During the course of the investigation, the DSS had attempted to arrest Emefiele, but their efforts were thwarted by a Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja. The court issued an order restraining the DSS from apprehending Emefiele. The order also extended to the Inspector-General of Police, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the CBN, who were listed as defendants.
In a separate hearing, another Federal High Court in Abuja declined the DSS’s application to arrest and detain Emefiele. Justice J. T. Tsoho, the Chief Judge, ruled that the DSS had failed to present substantial evidence to support their claims of terrorism financing and economic crimes against Emefiele.
Upon Emefiele’s return to Nigeria after an extended absence, military personnel and intelligence officers were deployed to ensure his safety and prevent any potential arrest by the DSS. The former CBN governor received extensive security measures, including military protection, as he resumed his duties.
As this controversy continues to unfold, it remains crucial to rely on accurate information and official statements to fully understand the situation surrounding the suspension of Godwin Emefiele. The investigation into allegations of terrorism financing and economic crimes will proceed, and further developments are expected in due course.
