In a significant breakthrough, the Uyo Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) apprehended 28 suspects, including identical twins Takwan Potential and Takwan Peter, on charges of internet fraud in Calabar, Cross River State. The arrests, carried out on Tuesday, June 6, were a result of credible intelligence linking the individuals to various forms of online fraudulent activities.
The list of suspects comprises Takwan Emmanuel, Kelvin Onedu, Evans Edwin, David Osuji, Osang Tony, Confidence Oblech, Uche Chinedu, Gabriel Kanong, Ojong Victor, Ephraim Ikechukwu, and Shedrack Mfon. Additionally, Godswill Omini, Walter Opha, Godswill Iti, Moses Sha, Prince Uba, Anyi Bassey, David Disi, Peter Silas, Christian Uche, Chidindu Oforji, Kelvin Anyanwu, Anthony Ojone, Samuel Disi, Gideon Joseph, and Ezekiel Francis were also apprehended.
According to the statement released on Thursday, the arrested individuals specialized in love scams, fraudulent impersonation, and obtaining money through false pretenses. Their illicit activities not only caused financial harm but also led to emotional distress for unsuspecting victims.
During the operation, law enforcement authorities seized several mobile phones, laptops, five cars, and a wifi device from the suspects. These items are believed to have been instrumental in facilitating their fraudulent activities.
The EFCC has affirmed that the arrested individuals will be promptly brought to court to face justice. This development underscores the agency’s commitment to combating internet fraud and ensuring the safety of online transactions for Nigerian citizens and beyond.
