Fuel Subsidy Removal: Oyo Governor sets up committee for salary review

Must read

In the wake of the federal government’s removal of petroleum subsidy, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State emphasizes the need to establish a committee to review workers’ salaries in the state. A crucial meeting was held between the state government and labor representatives, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). Attendees included the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, the Head of Service, Bunmi Oni, as well as prominent figures such as Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, Bayo Titilola-Sodo, and Alhaja Mutiat Ladoja, the wife of a former governor.

Governor Makinde has given the committee a timeframe of eight weeks to submit their report. The decision to form the committee stems from the recent removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). Governor Makinde highlights the importance of taking proactive measures and engaging with the state’s workforce, regardless of federal-level decisions.

He states, “Despite the impact of fuel subsidy removal on all of us, we have the ability to exercise control over certain aspects within Oyo State. It is crucial that we are proactive and prepared to address our own unique situation, even in the face of potential strikes or actions at the federal level.”

By setting up this committee, Governor Seyi Makinde aims to address the repercussions of the fuel subsidy removal and ensure that the state’s workers are adequately compensated. The move demonstrates the state’s commitment to taking independent action and protecting the interests of its workforce amidst broader economic changes.
