The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken a significant step in revitalizing the popular UTC Shopping Complex in Abuja by demolishing the over 30-year-old structure. This move aims to create space for the necessary restructuring required to transform the complex into a modern Shopping Complex that caters to the needs and challenges of global businesses.
Hassan Ogbole, the Deputy Director of Monitoring and Inspection in the Department of Development, highlighted that the existing structures were defective and in need of upgrading to meet global business standards. Provision has been made for the traders and occupants of the complex to facilitate its reconstruction.
Despite ample notices given to the occupants to vacate the premises and allow for the construction to commence, many refused to comply, either deliberately or due to a lack of alternative arrangements. The state of disrepair and unsuitability of the complex for occupation and business activities necessitated its replacement with a new development.
In addition to the objective of meeting global standards, the demolition of the complex also serves the purpose of addressing security challenges in the area. Peter Olumiji, the Secretary of Command and Control in the FCTA Department of Security, emphasized the need to curb criminal activities that have plagued the location. The remodeling plans aim to eliminate thuggery and the fraudulent production of official documents, which tarnish the reputation of the area.
Samuel Onuchukwu, one of the traders in the complex, expressed concern over the temporary site provided for the developers, citing its lack of security for conducting business. He revealed that many traders were still in the process of removing their goods and properties from the shops and offices.
The FCTA’s decision to demolish the UTC Complex represents a significant step towards rejuvenating the area and creating a modern hub that meets the demands of global business. The enforcement of compliance and the provision of alternative arrangements for traders demonstrate the administration’s commitment to progress and revitalization.
