The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) governors have criticized oil marketers for causing hardship among Nigerians following President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of fuel subsidy removal during his inauguration. The Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), representing the APC governors, expressed their concerns during a courtesy visit to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The PGF chairman, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, condemned the price hike on existing stock and called on Nigerians to support the government’s decision to remove the subsidy.
Governor Uzodinma reiterated the APC governors’ support for the removal of subsidy on petrol. He explained that the decision to eliminate the subsidy was made by the previous administration under President Muhammadu Buhari, following the recommendation of the National Economic Council (NEC) led by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. The governors recognized the financial challenges associated with funding the subsidy and stood firm in their endorsement of its removal.
When asked about measures to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians in light of the new realities, Governor Uzodinma expressed concern over the sudden price increase despite the fact that petroleum marketers had not imported any new products since May 29. He described the increase as an act of inhumanity and urged citizens to support one another during this transition. Governor Uzodinma also highlighted the upcoming commencement of production at the Dangote Refinery, which is expected to improve the availability of petroleum products in the market.
Governor Uzodinma emphasized the importance of market forces and competition in determining prices. He advocated for a free market where demand and supply dictate pricing, promoting a healthy business environment and economic growth. The governor expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s commitment to federal civil servants and assured that their experiences and needs would be taken into consideration. He emphasized the significance of encouraging investments and stimulating economic activities to ensure long-term prosperity for the nation.
Governor Uzodinma highlighted the positive outlook for the future, particularly with the upcoming operation of the Dangote Refinery. He anticipated that the refinery’s production, combined with the ongoing turnaround maintenance of refineries in Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri, would enhance the availability of petroleum products. This, in turn, would promote healthy market competition and greater supply. The governor urged a comprehensive approach that balances the needs of workers, encourages investment, and fosters economic growth for the benefit of all Nigerians.
In conclusion, the APC governors expressed their concern over the impact of subsidy removal on Nigerians and criticized oil marketers for exacerbating the situation. They reaffirmed their support for the removal of fuel subsidy and emphasized the need for citizens to unite behind the government’s decision. Governor Uzodinma highlighted the upcoming production of the Dangote Refinery and the maintenance of existing refineries as steps towards improving the availability of petroleum products. He stressed the importance of market competition, fair pricing, and stimulating economic activities to ensure long-term prosperity. The APC governors remain committed to addressing the challenges and working towards a brighter future for Nigeria.
