The Lamidi Apapa faction of the Labour Party (LP) has called on Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, to withdraw his case from the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal, citing his lack of seriousness. The faction believes that Obi has failed to provide substantial evidence to support his claims since the beginning of the tribunal. They accuse him of deceiving the Nigerian people and squandering donated resources for personal gain. This plea comes after a recent court hearing postponement, further complicating the legal proceedings.
During a press conference in Abuja, Abayomi Arabambi, the factional national publicity secretary of the party, expressed disappointment with Obi’s legal team’s approach and their challenge against the election of President Bola Tinubu. Arabambi suggested that Obi’s motives diverge from the desires of the Nigerian masses who willingly supported the Labour Party. He criticized Obi for misleading Nigerians and using their funds to finance the court proceedings, without delivering any tangible results.
Arabambi reminded the audience of an incident in court where Obi was unable to pay for essential documents related to the election, resulting in him presenting only thirty percent of the required materials to the Election Petition Tribunal. Arabambi questioned the logic of proceeding with incomplete documentation, knowing that other political parties might not accept or approve it. He highlighted the recent delays and failures of Obi’s legal team to file necessary processes, claiming that they are wasting the court’s time.
Arabambi emphasized that the court’s actions have vindicated the concerns of the Apapa faction, supporting their belief that Obi is not serious about the case. He accused Obi of joining the party with ulterior motives and causing chaos, while providing no real support or financial assistance to the party. Arabambi called on Obi to step down from his self-centered ambitions and refrain from disrupting the party if he cannot present substantial evidence to the tribunal.
In addition to the petition against Tinubu, Arabambi criticized the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for rejecting the new pump price of petrol following the fuel subsidy removal. He reiterated the Labour Party’s stance on the issue, stating that their position remains unchanged even though their candidate did not win the presidential election.
