The Lagos State Police Command has taken decisive action against corruption within its ranks by dismissing Sergeant Ekpo Shimuyere, who was attached to the Sogunle Division. The officer was dismissed for extorting N98,000 from a young man, a behavior that goes against the ethical standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to reports, Sergeant Ekpo allegedly confiscated the young man’s phone and used a Point of Sale (POS) operator to transfer N98,000 out of the N100,000 in the victim’s bank account. The victim lodged a complaint, prompting the police to initiate an investigation.
Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident and explained that Shimuyere was dismissed and disrobed by the Provost Department of the command. The police obtained the officer’s bank statement and traced the transferred money to the POS operator before it reached Shimuyere’s account.
The officer was detained to prevent tampering with evidence, and an Orderly Room trial was conducted. Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa, reviewed the trial and approved the punishment of dismissal for Sergeant Ekpo Shimuyere, who had Force No. 461654 and was attached to the Sogunle Police Division.
The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) emphasized the command’s zero tolerance for corruption and warned other officers against engaging in unprofessional conduct. The dismissal serves as a deterrent, and the command remains committed to taking action against any officer involved in such behavior.
