Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has taken a remarkable step towards building a better society by granting pardon to 115 inmates serving various jail terms across Correctional Centres in the State. This act of mercy comes as part of the governor’s agenda leading up to his second-term inauguration on May 29. The decision to grant the pardon was based on the recommendations provided by the State Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy, led by Barrister Saleh Samanja, a former Attorney-General of the State and now the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Legal Matters.
Expressing his hope that the released inmates have learned from their experiences and will steer clear of criminal activities, Governor Buni welcomed the report and commended the Committee for their diligent work. He also encouraged other philanthropic individuals to follow suit, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in constructing a more prosperous society.
The Committee diligently assessed Correctional Centers in Potiskum, Gashu’a, and Nguru towns, carefully selecting inmates who had committed minor offenses or were serving lesser jail terms, including those with fines as an option. The released individuals were overjoyed by Governor Buni’s act of benevolence and expressed their gratitude, promising to stay on the right path and avoid repeating their past mistakes.
