INEC denial of election material access: Nasarawa PDP raises concerns

Must read

The Nasarawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed frustration over the alleged denial of access to election materials by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The PDP is currently challenging the victory of Governor Abdullahi Sule in the governorship election held on March 18, citing possible manipulations in certain local councils.

Despite the tribunal granting the PDP’s request to inspect the materials used during the election, Ibrahim Hamza, the party’s Public Relations Officer, claimed that INEC officials at the local government level have been obstructing their efforts. Hamza further stated that the electoral officials are using flimsy excuses to prevent the PDP’s legal team from adequately presenting its case with the relevant documents.

According to Hamza, Karu local government area stands out as a particular concern, as the electoral officers have allegedly tampered with the ballot papers used during the election to align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s position at the tribunal. Similar suspicions of manipulation were raised in Lafia, Awe, and other local government areas where the PDP is contesting the election results.

During the inspection, the PDP discovered that certain electoral officers failed to provide the required materials or provided incomprehensible reasons for their unavailability. Additionally, there were reports of unused ballot papers being replaced with used ones, raising concerns of potential evidence tampering to cover up election malfeasance.

The PDP has called on concerned Nigerians and democracy advocates to intervene and request the intervention of Dr. Uthman Ajidagba, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Nasarawa State, and the commission’s Chief Administrative Officer. Their intervention is crucial in preventing further erosion of trust in the INEC administration in the state.

This development highlights the need for transparency and accountability in the electoral process, ensuring that all parties have fair and equal access to election materials. The resolution of these issues will play a significant role in upholding the credibility and integrity of the electoral system.
