The industrial action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Imo State has entered its sixth day, and Governor Hope Uzodimma has finally given in to the pressure. The strike was called after the disruption of the Workers’ Day celebration, and a temporary injunction had been issued by the national industrial court in Owerri against the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) from participating in any strike. However, it has now been revealed that the Imo State Government has agreed to resolve the issues with the NLC.
The joint statement signed by the government and the organized labour representatives indicated that a tripartite committee should look into and resolve the areas of disagreement and misunderstanding between the government and labour. The parties also condemned the disruptions of the May Day celebrations and pledged to ensure peaceful conduct of all NLC and TUC activities in the state.
To facilitate the peaceful settlement of any remaining disputes, both sides agreed to halt the current strike in Imo State, promising not to penalize any employee or official for their actions or inactions resulting from their industrial actions
