PSC Chairman, Arase commends CLEEN Foundation on police reform efforts

The newly appointed chairman of Police Service Commission (PSC), former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Solomon Arase has commended CLEEN Foundation on its contribution to the ongoing Nigerian Police reform.

Arase made the commendation during a visit to CLEEN Foundation’s new office at 27 Moses Majekodunmi Crescent, Opp Keystone Bank, Utako in Abuja on Thursday.

Disclosing that the Commission is setting up a Parallel Response Unit to follow up on matters of misconduct, Arase vowed that he won’t tolerate any form of unprofessional act from any officer.

Speaking on welfare of police officers’ families who lost their lives while in active service, he said it is in his wish and plan to train and empower the children and wives of dead police officers.

Arase said that both the staff of the Commission and Police Officers need adequate training to be able to function well and serve the public effectively. He, therefore, appealed to CLEEN Foundation to assist the Commission in training and retraining of police officers as the trained officers are going out of the system and the force is not able to replace them.

He added that major issues in the force that Nigerian public are angry about are issues of pre-trial detention, extra judicial killings and corruption.

In his welcome address, the Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Mr Gad Peter congratulated the former IGP on his new appointment while expressing confidence that with the wealth of experience and knowledge of the PSC chairman in the Police Force, the Commission would deliver on its mandates to the satisfaction of Nigerians.

Peter called on the Police Force to end brutality which resulted in EndSARS protests, intimidation, extortion and corruption among other unprofessional acts denting the image of the force in Nigeria.

The Executive Director also called on Federal Government to equip and support the police to perform their duty effectively and efficiently especially in the area of their welfare, which he said, would make the police proud of the job.

He also urged the public to respect uniform people while reiterating the Foundation’s readiness to support the new PSC chairman to ensure the police work well.

Peter presented CLEEN Foundation’s reports on the EndSARS protest, election and other reports on police reform to the PSC chairman.
