Benue community shuts only govt school over gunmen invasion

Must read

As the incessant kidnapping in Ugbugbu community and other adjoining villages in Owukpa, Ogbadibo LGA continues unabated, the only government secondary school in the area has been shut down.

Gunmen have recently been on rampage in the community, leading to the abduction of many between last year and this year.

On Sunday, no fewer than seven persons were abducted while an earlier kidnapping of a security man was being investigated.

The victims were kidnapped while they were on their way from market and some heading to a wedding ceremony.

They were released after much negotiation and the payment of ransom for all the victims.

Meanwhile, while police and other security agents are working frantically in order to arrest those behind the constant attacks and kidnapping in villages in the community, the same gunmen returned Thursday morning and made an attempt to kidnap two women while on their way from the farm.

The women who escaped the attack and attempted kidnap abandoned their farm produce along Achi-Ugbugbu road.

AFRIPOST gathered that the gunmen have their camps close to the only government owned secondary school and now a major threat to the school.

On Thursday, the principal of the school shut down the school over fear of the kidnappers, saying that it’s better to shut down the school than to negotiate the release of students.

Recall that the Benue State Police command had through the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Anene Sewuese Catherine, promised to go after the suspects.

Other security agencies have been mandated to go after kidnappers terrorsising the community.

But community members are concerned that the police and other security agents are yet to match their words with action. They lamented the current security situation in the area, calling immediate intervention..

Some of the chiefs who spoke anonymously appealed to the state and federal government to intervene immediately before they are sacked from the community.
