Ogun woman sells 18-month-old baby to offset bank loan

Must read

In a shocking turn of events, a 33-year-old woman identified as Olaide Adekunle has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly selling her 18-month-old baby to pay off her bank loan of N600,000. Adekunle had traveled to Lagos on March 15, 2023, to hawk sachet water in a bid to raise funds to offset the debt.

However, when her efforts proved futile, she resorted to selling her baby, Moridiat Rasaq, without the knowledge or consent of her husband. The incident was reported to the police by her husband, Nureni Rasaq, and the suspect was subsequently arrested.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, a confessional statement obtained from the suspect revealed that she met a man who introduced her to the woman that eventually bought the child in Lagos. The acting Commissioner of Police in the state, Babakura Muhammed, has directed that the suspect be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligent Departments (SCIID) for further investigation and possible recovery of the baby.

This heart-wrenching story highlights the dire consequences of debt and financial stress. It is important to seek financial advice and assistance when facing debt rather than resorting to illegal means such as selling a child. The Ogun State Police Command should be commended for their swift action in apprehending the suspect and working towards the recovery of the child
