Akwa Ibom governor intervenes in oil communities dispute over alleged irregular boundary demarcations

Must read

Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel has intervened in the ongoing dispute between the oil communities of Akwa Ibom, including Eastern Obolo Local Government Area. The communities have protested the recent boundary delineation exercise, claiming that it has ceded some of the oil-rich areas to the neighbouring Onna LGA, where the Governor hails from. The Governor has assured the communities that the decision was made in the best interest of the State and its people, and to avoid skirmishes arising from boundary matters.

The House of Assembly has passed the ‘State Map Establishment Law 2023’ to confer legal status on the decision. Governor Emmanuel explained that the law seeks to lay to rest agitations, boundary disputes, and communal conflicts, rather than exclude any group through the State’s demarcation. The law will give the state an avenue to produce an official map to promote peace and reduce boundary conflicts, and it should not raise any dust by any group or persons in the state as everything remains intact.

Addressing Christian adherents during the Government House Monthly Prayer Meeting, Governor Emmanuel dismissed any sentiments in the decision, assuring it was done in the best interest of the State and its people to avoid skirmishes arising from boundary matters. He explained that the map does not exclude anybody, and it does not tamper with anything, including the state’s resources, location, sharing formulae, or anything else. The Governor urged the people not to criticize or abuse unnecessarily and assured the communities that everything remains intact.

The stakeholders of Eastern Obolo have described the decision as “politically-motivated.” However, the Governor has assured the communities that the decision was made in the best interest of the state and its people. The new law seeks to promote peace, reduce boundary conflicts, and lay to rest agitations, boundary disputes, and communal conflicts. The official map will give the state an avenue to produce an official map, and it should not raise any dust by any group or persons in the state as everything remains intact.
