Man, 59, remanded for manhandling female relative in Benue

A 59-year-old man, Kelvin Iorfa, has been remanded in custody at the Federal Correctional Centre in Makurdi by the Chief Magistrate’s Court over allegations of assault, attempt to commit culpable homicide, and other offences. This was after he was accused of beating his female relative, Mrs. Nguwasen Iorfa, to a coma.

The incident was reported on April 11, 2023, at the Police Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi by Jenkies Shande. According to the police, Kelvin Iorfa, of the same address as the victim, was hitting her with objects on her head and other sensitive parts of her body until she became unconscious. He then left her to her fate.

Kelvin Iorfa was arrested by the police and has since confessed to committing the crime. The offence contravenes Section 266 and 230 of the Penal Code Law of Benue State 2004. During the court hearing, several lawyers appeared for interested parties.

Kelvin Iorfa’s counsel, I.A Ututu, made an oral application for his bail, but the presiding magistrate, R.S Iyorshe, asked him to approach the court formally. The police prosecuting officer, Inspector Ato Godwin, informed the court that the investigation into the matter was still ongoing and requested another date to enable the prosecution to prove its case.

Chief Magistrate R.S. Iyorshe ordered that Mr Iorfa be remanded in custody at the Federal Correctional Center until June 8 when the case will be further mentioned
