Must read

A body has been recovered from the rubble of the collapsed building at 1st Avenue, Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos State. The building collapsed on Wednesday, and the search and recovery operation led by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has been ongoing. The body of an adult male, who had previously been unaccounted for by site supervisors, was found yesterday.

According to Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the commissioner for information and strategy in Lagos State, the excavation of the site using the architectural designs continues. The site has been divided into quadrants for a painstaking search and rescue operation. Quadrants 2 and 3 have been levelled to ground zero, with the search operation completed, while Quadrant 4 is still ongoing.

The collapse of the seven-storey building under construction in the highbrow Banana Island has raised concerns about building safety standards in Lagos State. In response, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered a stop to all building construction processes in the island to allow for a comprehensive audit by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA). The state government has also launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse.

It was reported that 25 people were rescued from the site when the building collapsed, and they are all doing fine. However, when a roll call was conducted by the site supervisors, it was discovered that nobody could ascertain whether the victim whose body was found yesterday morning was on the site at the time the roll call was taken.

As the search and rescue operation continues, it is important to note that the safety of building construction and maintenance is crucial. Building collapses have become a recurring issue in Lagos State, and this has prompted the government to take action to ensure that building regulations are strictly adhered to.

The recovery of the body from the Banana Island building collapse serves as a reminder of the need for builders and contractors to prioritize safety in the construction process. It also highlights the importance of regulatory bodies like LASBCA in ensuring that buildings are constructed to meet safety standards.

The recovery of the body from the collapsed building in Banana Island is a tragic reminder of the need for safety standards in building construction and maintenance. It is essential that regulatory bodies like LASBCA enforce these standards to prevent future incidents of building collapse
