In a shocking revelation, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has disclosed that over 130 people have been killed by suspected armed herdsmen in the state within just 10 days. Speaking after an expanded security meeting in Makurdi, the governor also announced the suspension of the operation of livestock guards who are responsible for arresting stray animals for two weeks.
The decision to suspend the operation of the livestock guards was made to enable the herdsmen, who have flooded the state with herds of cattle, to leave within the stipulated time. Governor Ortom emphasized that there is a law prohibiting open grazing in Benue, and the security agencies should inform the herdsmen about it.
He also lamented the alleged involvement of some young persons in Benue who are conniving with armed herdsmen to rustle cattle and sell them, and accused some traditional rulers and stakeholders in affected communities of complicity in the unholy act. The governor directed security agencies to arrest anyone found guilty, irrespective of status, tribe, religion, or affiliation.
Governor Ortom commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his directives to ensure the arrest of the perpetrators of the recent massacre in the state. However, he called on the security agencies to back up the communication with action so that the people of Benue can live in peace and sleep with their eyes closed.
To avoid further issues, the governor warned against going after the herdsmen to rustle their cattle or attack or kill anyone, as anyone caught perpetrating evil will be dealt with according to the law.
