Delta govt denies deporting Anambra woman for begging alms in Asaba

The Delta State Government has denied reports that it deported a woman from Anambra State who was begging for alms and causing a nuisance in Asaba, the state capital. The woman, identified as 32-year-old Ogochukwu Nwabude, was reportedly at Inter Bau Roundabout in the capital city for about two weeks begging for alms with her baby.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, officials of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development conducted a check on her after observing her for a period and found that she was stable and of sound mind, but needed financial help. As part of standard procedure in handling such cases, the ministry gave her some assistance and returned her to its counterpart in Anambra for necessary support.

Ifeajika explained that this measure is a routine activity on such cases and often transpires among states in the country and the federal capital territory. He further stated that the Delta State Government acted in good faith and within the ambits of regulations, which the Anambra State Government acknowledged with gratitude.

The Chief Press Secretary emphasized that it is necessary to state that other states in the country had returned some of Delta’s citizens at different times, and it is a normal routine that should not be politicized because it involves serious humanitarian service. He noted that the Delta State Government provided the woman with some assistance and returned her to her state of origin to ensure that she is properly re-integrated into the society.

The actual cause of the woman’s situation is not known at this time, but it is clear that the Delta State Government acted appropriately in providing assistance and returning her to her state of origin.
