NAFDAC seals shops containing unregistered drugs worth N15m in FCT

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has recovered unregistered drugs and psychoactive substances worth N15 million in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The agency sealed two shops in the FCT where these harmful drugs were found.

According to a report by Radio Nigeria, an operation in Zuba Motor Park uncovered a shop full of unwholesome drugs that were either expired, unregistered or harmful. The Deputy Director of the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate at NAFDAC, Mr. Tamanuwa Andrew Baba, disclosed that a drug called “Hajia Aisha” or “Hajia Salama” discovered to be smuggled from Ghana contained a substance called “Pyridine” that can cause cancer and other diseases.

At the second location in Utako market in Abuja Area Council (AMAC), aphrodisiac drugs were seized. Mr Baba warned that such drugs have led to the death of many men and urged them to seek proper medication from credible health institutions to treat their sex-related problems.

The sales boy to the owner of the shop at Utako, Isah Sani, said they usually purchase the drugs from Lagos, Kano and other parts of the country. Isah, who was remorseful, urged others in the same illicit business to desist from the act.

During the operation, NAFDAC officials emphasized the importance of ensuring that only registered products are sold in the country. They also cautioned Nigerians against patronizing unregistered drug vendors as they pose a danger to public health.

The crackdown on unregistered drugs and substances is part of NAFDAC’s efforts to safeguard public health by ensuring that only safe, effective and quality products are available in the Nigerian market. The agency has promised to continue to monitor the market and ensure that unscrupulous individuals do not take advantage of unsuspecting citizens
