The Kaduna State government has announced the reinstatement of 1,266 primary school teachers who were previously disengaged following a competency test in June 2022. The decision to recall the sacked teachers followed an examination and verification of their cases.

In a statement issued by the public relations officer (PRO) Hauwa Mohammed, on behalf of the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB) chairman, the government approved the reinstatement of various categories of teachers. These include 392 teachers who passed the competency test, 515 central administrative staff who were exempted from the test, and 298 teachers who were verified to be sick during the test and had valid medical excuses supported by doctor’s certificates.

Other categories of reinstated teachers are those who were victims of kidnapping or involved in accidents. However, 22 teachers were permanently removed from the payroll for unsubstantiated claims.

The reinstated teachers are expected to collect their reinstatement letters from their respective education secretaries immediately, according to the statement.

This move is in line with the Kaduna State government’s commitment to providing quality education to its citizens. The government has been working to improve the quality of education in the state, including conducting a competency test for primary school teachers in 2017 and subsequently disengaging over 21,000 teachers who failed the test.

While the action was met with criticism from various quarters, the government insisted that it was necessary to rid the education system of unqualified and incompetent teachers.

With the reinstatement of these 1,266 teachers, it is expected that the education sector in Kaduna State will receive a boost in quality and productivity.
