A 57-year-old woman, Ahemen Jam, has been remanded in prison by a Makurdi Chief Magistrate Court for criminal conspiracy, assault, and causing grievous hurt to her house help. Mrs. Jam and her son, Ornguga Jam, allegedly beat their house help, Kpamor Jir, and inflicted wounds on his buttocks.

On March 24th, 2023, at about 0800hrs, the Police received a distress call at ‘E’ Division Police Station, Makurdi, that Mrs. Jam and her son conspired and beat their house help, causing wounds to his buttocks. The Police swung into action and took the victim to Benue State University Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Jonah Olutu, told the court that during the investigation, Ahemen Jam was arrested for committing the crime, while her son Ornguga Jam is still at large. It was also revealed that the injury was inflicted on the child between 17th March, 2023, and 24th March, 2023, by beating him daily with an electric cable.

The victim was still being compelled to fetch water for Mrs. Jam and her son before neighbors discovered the wound and raised an alarm. The offences contravene Sections 97, 266, and 248 of the Penal Code Law of Benue State, 2004.

When the charges were read to the accused, she pleaded not guilty, and her counsel made an oral application for bail. However, the trial Magistrate, J.S Iorshe, ruled that the offences involve bodily injury to a child and remanded Mrs. Jam at the Federal Correctional Facility at Yaikyor, Makurdi. The matter has been adjourned to May 17th, 2023, for further mention.
