Amid protest, INEC declares Tinubu winner of Nigeria’s presidential election

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been officially declared winner of the 2023 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Announcing the results of the election in the early hours of Wednesday, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, said Tinubu polled a total of 8,794,726 to defeat his closest rivals and candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP who polled 6,984, 520 and 6,101,533 respectively.

The New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, led by Musa Kwankwaso scored 1,496,687. The votes of other political parties put together was 666,298.

INEC announced that the former Lagos State Governor fulfilled the 25 percent votes from 24 States as stipulated in the Electoral Act 2022 as amended, and consequently declared him winner of the election.

Recall that some opposition political parties had staged a walk-out over alleged infraction of the electoral law, citing failure to use the BIVAS, nationwide iregulariess, violence and intimidation in some states.
