Pandemonium in Anambra State as unknown gunmen reportedly attacked a police checkpoint leaving unconfirmed number of persons dead while some were seriously injured.
The incident which took place between Ihiala-Uli axis in Ihiala local government area of the state happened around 10:30 am, Tuesday morning.
The Nation gathered that commuters ran for their lives while all the security operatives removed their uniforms and took cover in nearby bushes and houses as the gunmen shot continuously.
Report also said that commercial bus operators have abandoned the Onitsha- Owerri expressway as of the time of filing this report for fear of being killed.
A senior police officer, who spoke with The Nation in confidence, when Anambra Police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu refused to pick up calls for confirmation when contacted, confirmed the attack.
The source said:” I’ve not heard of any death but I can tell you there were casualties during the gun battle”
The source added Police Commissioner Echeng Echeng has despatched special squad to Ihiala to quell the situation.
