EKEDC replacing underground cables in Island network for improved service delivery

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) says it is gradually replacing underground electricity cables on Lagos Island, Victoria Island and in Ikoyi
to improve service delivery within the areas.

Dr Tinuade Sanda, the Managing Director of EKEDC, said this at a customers’ engagement forum organised by the DisCo on Thursday on Victoria Island, Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the customers at the forum were drawn from various areas under Island District including Obalende, Victoria Island, Lagos Island and Ikoyi.

Sanda, represented by Mrs Rekhiat Momoh, Chief Commercial Officer, EKEDC, said the Island network was the oldest network in Nigeria with most of the underground cables installed decades ago.

She said that the DisCo was aware of the challenge posed by the underground cables, especially, in finding faults and restoring supply quickly within the areas.

Sanda noted that while power supply had increased significantly in recent weeks, replacing obsolete cables and upgrading of transformers were being done to stabilise supply to their customers.

While appealing for patience and support from the customers to enable EKEDC execute the projects, she said that the DisCo would continue to invest in upgrading its electrical installations.

She also appealed to the customers to help in the protection of electrical installations in their localities and also report those engaging in meter bypass and energy theft to EKEDC officials.

On metering, Sanda advised the customers to embrace the ongoing Mobile Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme where customers could get their prepaid meters within 72 hours and avoid disputes relating to estimated billing.

She emphasised that the purpose of the town hall meeting was to improve the DisCo’s relationship with its customers and engaging them positively to resolve disputes.

Earlier, Messrs Odunloye Abisoye and Isa Abiodun who spoke on behalf of the customers commended EKEDC for improved power supply within the network.

They, however, called for accelerated metering of customers to reduce cases of estimated billing by the DisCo. (NAN)
