William Ruto: Seven things to know about Kenya’s President-elect

Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto and presidential candidate for the United Democratic Alliance and Kenya Kwanza political coalition has been declared winner of Kenya’s presidential election.

Below are seven things to know about the President-elect:

  • William Ruto is 55 years old.
  •  Ruto is a member of United Democratic Alliance/Kenya Kwanza Alliance party
  •  Ruto has been Kenya’s deputy president since 2013
  •  He founded the YK92 youth front, propelling his political career during President Daniel arap Moy’s era
  •  Ruto was charged with crimes against humanity after the 2007 elections by the International Criminal Court but was discharged and acquitted in 2016.
  •  In 2013, he was found guilty of appropriating a 40-hectare of plot in Eldoret, western Kenya after the 2007 elections.
  •  Ruto’s campaign focuses on a bottom-up economic model to empower people.
