Political instability in Libya is fueling terrorism in most African countries including Nigeria, President Buhari has claimed.
According to the Nigerian president, the support of the international communities is needed to end the wave of insecurity across Africa and Nigeria,
Buhari said this while receiving letters of credence from the new Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador James Kingston Christoff and Ambassador of Mexico to Nigeria, Juan Alfred Miranda Oritz, at the State House in Abuja, on Tuesday.
He, however, said his administration was doing everything possible to ensure the country wins the war against terrorism.
Buhari said friendly countries like Canada and Mexico have been supporting in the fight against terrorism, urging them not to relent in their effort.
“The political instability in Libya continues to fuel terrorism in the Sahel, West, and Central African regions.
“Nigeria is not left out of the equation as we are fighting to rid our country of banditry, kidnapping, herder/farmer clashes, and insurgency.
“We are, however, making meaningful progress with the support of friendly countries like yours to sustain this fight until we overcome these challenges,” he said.
Recall that only in the month of July, terrorists attacked Kuje prison, and the guard brigades in Bwari, all in Abuja-Nigeria. Also, a terrorist group launched an attack on a military checkpoint in Madalla near Zuba. a ‘stone throw’ from Abuja.
Background
The Nigerian capital witnessed different attacks by terrorists group, causing panic and tension in the capital considered to be the safest in the country.
On July 5th, 2022, gunmen suspected to be bandits invaded the medium-security prison in Kuje, Kuje Area Council, Abuja. Many inmates were set free, while an officer of the Civil Defence Corps was killed.
While the government was still trying to unravel the mystery of the Kuje attack, in a single week and also in the month of July, some gunmen attacked the presidential guard brigades in Bwari, and Madalla Abuja. Bwari is only a few kilometers away from the presidential villa.
With the audacity displayed by the terror group, some top senior military officers and many others paid the supreme price. At first, the report was concealed until the media alerted the public in what appeared like an investigation. Different newspapers, however, had different versions to report. One thing that was common in all the reports is the killing of an army captain and a Lt. Colonel.
In the same week, gunmen launched another attack on the guards stationed at the Madalla-Zuba axis. The incident which happened near the Zuma rock led to the death of two officers.
Residents are now apprehensive following the constant attacks on the nation’s capital.
