Welcome to the month of August. Let’s look back briefly on what happened in the month of July.
The top pick by AFRIPOST in the month of July are the 3 remarkable events that happened.
Despite the several events in the month of July, three of them caught our editorial attention and have been picked as the top stories of the month.
Here are the 3 important events in July in no particular order:
Fuel increment amid scarcity
Despite the ongoing scarcity of the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, also known as petrol, Nigerians were shocked in the month of July by an unexpected increment of the product.
The product that was earlier sold for N165 per litre in Abuja and other states was jerked up to between N187 – N230 a liter. But Nigerians could only do just a little in protest of the upward review because they needed the product to survive; to power the generator amid an epileptic power situation.
But the Minister of The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, said the government was yet to increase the pump price of fuel. he blamed the marketers for the increment. The question, however, is who is now n charge of the regulation in the sector? The government or the marketers?
Fall of the Naira
The continuous depreciation of the naira reached an alarming level in July as it was seen falling to a whopping N720/$1 in the black market.
The depreciation of the currency over the last seven months has further enriched those who deal in the currency business.
The effect on the nation’s economy is massive as traders and dealers have reviewed their prices, pushing Nigerians into more hardship. The situation led NNPC and the CBN to throw tantrums at each other while Nigerians remain at the middle, absorbing all the shock.
Terrorists invade Nigeria capital, Abuja
In the month of July, Abuja, the Nigerian capital witnessed different attacks by terrorists group, causing panic and tension in the capital considered to be the safest in the country.
On July 5th, 2022, gunmen suspected to be bandits invaded the medium-security prison in Kuje, Kuje Area Council, Abuja. Many inmates were set free, while an officer of the Civil Defence Corps was killed.
While the government was still trying to unravel the mystery of the Kuje attack, in a single week and also in the month of July, some gunmen attacked the presidential guard brigades in Bwari, and Madalla Abuja. Bwari is only a few kilometers away from the presidential villa. With the audacity displayed by the terror group, some top senior military officers and many others paid the supreme price. At first, the report was concealed until the media alerted the public in what appeared like an investigation. Different newspapers, however, had different versions to report. One thing that was common in all the reports is the killing of an army captain and a Lt. Colonel.
In the same week, gunmen launched another attack on the guards stationed at the Madalla-Zuba axis. The incident which happened near the Zuma rock led to the death of two officers.
Residents are now apprehensive following the constant attacks on the nation’s capital.
The month of July was no doubt an eventful one for journalists, a tough month for the economy, and a month of tears for the military.
