The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court has ruled that the suspension of Twitter operations in June 2021 by the Nigerians government was unlawful, warning the government against a similar order.
This judgment comes following a suit filed by Chief Malcolm Emokiniovo Omirhobo, challenging the ban as a violation of his fundamental rights to freedom of expression, speech and association and other Nigerian nationals.
The case files by Malcolm was backed up with other suits with a similar cause of action.
The government of Nigeria had as from 5 June, 2021 to 13 January 2022 officially banned Twitter, restricting the platform’s patronage in the country.
The delete of Buhari’s alleged offensive tweet was responsible for the ban.
