Russia vs Ukraine: Nigerian govt stops volunteers from travelling to Ukraine for war

The Federal Government has said attempts by some Nigerians to join forces with Ukraine in the ongoing war with Russia would be resisted.

Afripost.ng recalls that Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president had solicited support from around the world, saying volunteers should join the fight against the invasion of the country by Russia. Nigerians willing to leave the country for the mission are to have only 1000 dollars in their account.

About 150 Nigerians had stormed the Ukrainian embassy in Abuja as volunteers, willing to be recruited to travel for the war.

However, a statement issued on Monday by the spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca Omayuli, said such a move would not be allowed.

According to the statement, the Federal Government would discuss with the Ukrainian Embassy in Nigeria to stop such volunteers from leaving the country.

The statement reads, “As a responsible member of the international community and consistent with our obligations under international law, Nigeria discourages the use of mercenaries anywhere in the world and will not tolerate the recruitment, in Nigeria, of Nigerians as mercenaries to fight in Ukraine or anywhere else in the world”.
