Those proposing Media Bills are evil – Ortom

Must read

Governor Samuel Ortom has warned the Federal Government against making moves that can gag the freedom of the press in the country.

Addressing reporters in Makurdi, the state capital, on the controversial media Bills before the National Assembly, Ortom said: “Democracy is about freedom of speech, expression and association. So, why should some people sit somewhere and say they want to gag the press?”

He added: “In Benue State, I have not gagged the press. I always said that if someone said something against me, give the person the opportunity so that you can balance your story.

“I am a journalist. If you balance your report, there is no evil. So, there is no basis to gag the press whatsoever. Those people proposing those media Bills are evil. They won’t be there forever. Tomorrow, they can be governors and even ordinary people. If you don’t have people speaking on their behalf, there can be tyrants in a democratic society.

“So, I completely disagreed with them. There should be freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Nigeria.”
