Yellow fever: My people are dying – Senator Moro cries out during plenary

The senator representing the Benue South Senatorial District, Senator Abah Moro has moved a motion on the floor of Senate drawing the attention of the upper Chamber to ravaging yellow fever epidemic in Owukpa, Otukpa and other communities of the state.

The motion titled “URGENT NEED TO DEAL WITH THE OUTBREAK OF A STRANGE AILMENT SAID TO BE YELLOW FEVER RAVAGING EPEILO-OTUKPA AND ITABONO-OWUKPA COMMUNITIES IN OGBADIBO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF BENUE STATE” was moved during Wednesday plenary at the house of Senate.

AFRIPOST reports that the strange disease which was medically discovered to be yellow fever had killed many residents of the affected areas since it’s outbreak while more patients still hospitalized.

More worrisome, according to a source, is some part of Owukpa where villagers continue to record numbers of deaths on a daily basis despite the recent vaccination by the state government.

According to senator Moro, the motion was billed to be moved in previous plenary after his tour to the affected communities but could not be read until today due to pending issues in the house.

During the deliberation, the senator called on the Federal Ministry of Health and other relevant agencies to “quickly step in to contain this epidemic.

“My people are dying and that needs to be stopped without delay”.

The lawmaker who lauded the Benue State Government on its intervention, argued that the efforts were not enough, hence, need for more medical attentions.

” The strange ailment has not yet been effectively diagnosed by health authorities, even though, the Benue Ministry Health and Human Services has been able to intervene to some extent, having collected samples and sent to National Reference Laboratory to be able to establish the kind of organism that is causing the ailment, and is availing victims of interim treatment; and deeply saddened that people are affected in the localities and dying on daily basis in their numbers with Epeilo and Itabono communities recording 20 and 30 deaths respectively.

“The death toll increases hourly and the disease is spreading to Ichama, in Okpokwu LGA, where three deaths have been recorded”.
