Man, 38, in court over alleged N140, 000 fraud

A 38-year-old man, Gbenga John, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Ota Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a woman of N140,000.

John, whose address was not provided, was charged with fraud.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Titi Olatoye, told the court that the accused person committed the offence on Feb. 26 at about 12 p.m. at Oko Baale area, Ota.

Olatoye said that the accused person collected N140,000 under the pretext of  digging a borehole for the complainant, Bolanle Awosika, which he failed to carry out.

“The accused person converted the money to personal use instead of fulfilling the agreement between them,” she said.

Olatoye said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun,2006.

The accused person, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs Sam Obaleye, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with a surety in like sum and adjourned the case until Sept.14 for trial.
