A Chinese man has been sentenced to death for killing his Vietnamese mother-in-law over a quarrel, state media reported on Wednesday.
“The Tay Ninh provincial court on Tuesday handed a death sentence to Xiong Zhoughen, 39, for murdering Vo Thi Mong Diep, the mother of his wife, in a heated fight last year,’’ the daily Vnexpress reported.
According to the court, Xiong married Diep’s daughter in December 2018 and the couple subsequently moved to China.
His wife returned to Vietnam to live with her mother in May 2019.
On June 2, 2019, Xiong visited his wife and mother-in-law in Tay Ninh province for a few days before asking Diep for some money to return to China.
Diep refused, saying she did not have money and asked Xiong to leave.
A subsequent quarrel turned physical, with the man beating his mother-in-law with a pestle before slitting her throat with a knife.
Xiong tried to flee however but was later arrested. (dpa/NAN)
