A Mobile Court in Minna on Tuesday sentenced nine persons for violation of Niger State COVID-19 Preventive, Containment and Emergency Order.
The violators were ordered to pay fines of N2,000 or serve six months in the correctional centre.
Speaking at the State High Court, Minna, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Chairman, Niger State Task Force on COVID-19, Mr Ahmed Matane, said the conviction of the violators would serve as a deterrent to others.
Matane said that the sitting of the mobile court was part of the implementation of the Executive Order which Gov. Abubakar Sani Bello earlier pronounced and gazetted.
He said that the State Government was fully committed to implementing to the latter all the restriction measures as announced.
The SSG revealed that the state government had also established mobile courts across the 25 local government areas meant to ensure enforcement and compliance to the directives.
He said that the aim was to protect the people of the state from the Coronavirus pandemic.
Mane, therefore, enjoined residents not to undermine the restriction order, saying it is for the benefit of the general public.
The Lead Counsel, Mr Suleman Wushishi, disclosed that nine persons were prosecuted and convicted following the violation of the COVID-19 order.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Sani Bello had invoked the Niger State COVID-19 Preventive, Containment and Emergency Order 2020.
The governor said it was for the good order, safety, security and public health of people of the state.
